cerclage

Pregnancy loss is one of the most devastating things a couple may have to endure. One possible cause of pregnancy loss or preterm delivery is a cervix which is unable to remain closed and hold the pregnancy in the uterus. This condition is known as incompetent or insufficient cervix. In the classic presentation of insufficient cervix, the cervix painlessly opens. The bag of waters sometimes breaks or labor may start as a result. We have developed an expertise in management of insufficient cervix including the placement of a stitch in the cervix known as a cerclage. A cerclage helps to keep the cervix closed so a pregnancy won't be lost. We also are uniquely qualified for the most difficult cerclage procedure known as rescue cerclage where the cervix may already be open several centimeters and even when the bag of waters has bulged out through the cervix.
